Color and brightness in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2
The Zone in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is deliberately faded and the underground is dark. Great for atmosphere, but fighting mutants in half-darkness you need to see more.
Washed-out colors are the style
The developers use a muted palette and color grading. A little saturation (130%) brings the Zone to life without breaking the mood. More than that is not needed — the picture turns cartoonish.
Underground and night
| Situation | Gamma | Brightness |
|---|---|---|
| Open Zone in daytime | 1.1–1.2 | 100–104 |
| Buildings, basements | 1.3–1.4 | 106–108 |
| Underground, night | 1.6–1.8 | 110–115 |
The ready-made "S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2" preset: saturation 130%, gamma 1.35, brightness 108 — an all-round option for most places.
HDR
If your monitor cannot hold high brightness, HDR mode makes the game duller. Compare SDR and HDR on your own monitor — more in HDR in games.
Camera effects
Motion blur, film grain and chromatic aberration add a cinematic feel but reduce clarity. If you want to see more, turn them off in graphics settings.

Frequently asked questions
Why are S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 colors washed out?
It is the Zone's art style. Saturation around 130% livens the picture without losing the atmosphere.
How do I make underground areas brighter?
Raise gamma to 1.6–1.8 in a separate profile and switch it on with a hotkey.
Should I use HDR in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2?
Only on a monitor with true HDR. On a regular monitor SDR usually looks better.
