DayZ at night: gamma and brightness

September 29, 2026 · 3 min read · Shooters & survival

Nights in DayZ are genuinely dark on many servers — without a flashlight or night sight you only see the sky. The right gamma makes tree lines and buildings readable.

Why in-game brightness is not enough

The in-game brightness slider lifts the whole picture, and it quickly turns grey. Gamma is selective: it brightens dark tones and leaves light ones alone. At night it matters more.

Night values

SituationGammaBrightnessSaturation
Moonlit night1.6–1.8110–116115%
Moonless night1.9–2.2118–125110%
Dusk1.3–1.4105–108125%
Day1.0–1.1100140%

The ready-made "DayZ — Night" preset: gamma 1.8, brightness 116, saturation 118%. For the darkest nights — "Night vision" (1.9) or "Night like day" (2.4).

A handy setup

  1. Main profile — daytime, bound to DayZ, turns on by itself.
  2. Night profile — on a hotkey.
  3. Dusk — on the next key, so you do not jump straight to maximum gamma.
On monitors with poor black levels, high gamma pulls noise and banding out of the sky. If you see it, lower gamma by 0.1–0.2.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gamma for DayZ at night?

About 1.6–1.8 on moonlit nights and up to 2.0–2.2 on moonless ones. The "DayZ — Night" preset uses 1.8.

Why does DayZ look grey after my changes?

You raised brightness instead of gamma. Bring brightness back to about 110 and work with gamma.

Can I switch the night profile without leaving the game?

Yes, with a DisplayTune hotkey — it works on top of the game.
