Rust caves, tunnels and monuments too dark
Caves, tunnels and monument basements in Rust are nearly black, and a flashlight gives you away to everyone. A dedicated underground profile solves it without the flashlight.
Why day and caves need different profiles
Gamma that lets you see in a cave blows out the sky and grass outside in daylight. And a daytime profile is useless in a cave. So it is easier to keep a separate darkness profile and switch it on with a key at the entrance.
Underground values
| Place | Gamma | Brightness | Saturation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caves | 1.7–1.8 | 112–115 | 110–120% |
| Tunnels and underground | 1.6–1.8 | 110–114 | 115% |
| Dark monuments | 1.3–1.5 | 106–110 | 150–160% |
| Houses and bunkers | 1.2–1.4 | 104–108 | same as daytime |
The ready-made option is "Rust — Caves & monuments" (gamma 1.75, brightness 114). For monuments with both light and shadow — "Rust — Monuments".
Tune your own for your monitor
- Go into a cave in daytime and stand in the darkest part.
- Raise gamma until walls and exits become visible.
- If the picture turns grey, set brightness back to 100–105 and add more gamma.
- Walk outside and press your normal profile key — that checks the switch is comfortable.

Frequently asked questions
What gamma do I need for Rust caves?
About 1.7–1.8. The "Rust — Caves & monuments" preset uses 1.75 with brightness 114.
Can the cave profile switch on automatically?
Not by in-game location — the app never reads the game. A hotkey is easier: one press at the entrance and one at the exit.
Why is the picture noisy in caves after tuning?
High gamma pulls noise and banding out of dark tones. Lower gamma by 0.1–0.2 or raise brightness a couple of points.
